Therapy Takes Time: The Rush to Change
I came across an intriguing saying recently: "You can't push the river." This phrase was used to emphasize the importance of patience when it comes to change. I found the metaphor quite insightful for a few reasons. Take a moment to visualize someone attempting to physically push a river, standing in the water, pushing while the water effortlessly flows around them.
A river serves as a powerful analogy for the process of change. Picture the river's source as where you are now, and downstream as your desired destination. There are numerous ways we resist this flow. Some of us may avoid even getting into the river altogether, effectively evading change, unless circumstances force us in.
Once we're in the river, resistance to change can persist. We might swim upstream, attempting to return to where we began. Or we might swim to the side and settle for partial change. Sometimes, we cling to rocks and branches, doing our utmost to impede progress towards change. Occasionally, we allow external factors, like people in our lives who resist change, to pull us out of the river in a metaphorical helicopter, preventing change from disrupting their lives.
But what if we genuinely desire to change?
In these instances, we find ourselves largely at the river's mercy. As the saying goes, "You can't push the river." Similar to how a river flows at its own natural pace, the process of change moves in its own time. People frequently inquire about the duration of change. The somewhat frustrating answer is that it takes as long as it takes.
Much like a river meandering in some areas and rushing through rapids in others, change unfolds at its necessary pace. Most of the traits or behaviors we seek to change about ourselves didn't develop overnight; they have evolved over years. Although we often wish for overnight transformations, it takes time to unravel years of ingrained habits, training, and learning that brought us to our current state.
So, as challenging as it may be, patience is the key. Do your part to facilitate the process of change, but simultaneously understand that the river of change flows at its own pace, regardless of how hard you may try to push it.
